Abstract
Background: Stable coronary artery disease (CAD) is associated with persistent endothelial dysfunction, systemic inflammation, and residual cardiovascular risk despite standard medical therapy. Integrative Ayurvedic interventions may provide additional benefits through lifestyle modification, stress reduction, dietary regulation, and selected herbal formulations.
Objective: To evaluate the effects of an integrative Ayurvedic cardiac care protocol on endothelial function, inflammatory biomarkers, and cardiovascular risk profiles in patients with stable CAD.
Methods: This prospective clinical study enrolled patients with clinically documented stable CAD receiving guideline-directed medical therapy. Participants additionally underwent a structured 12-week Ayurvedic cardiac care protocol comprising individualized dietary counselling, yoga and breathing exercises, stress-management practices, lifestyle modification, and standardized Ayurvedic formulations. The primary outcome was change in endothelial function measured by brachial artery flow-mediated dilation. Secondary outcomes included high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, tumour necrosis factor-alpha, lipid profile, blood pressure, body mass index, glycaemic parameters, angina frequency, exercise capacity, and quality of life. Safety was assessed through clinical monitoring and hepatic and renal function tests.
Results: Completion of the integrative protocol was associated with improved flow-mediated dilation and reductions in inflammatory biomarker levels. Favourable changes were also observed in systolic blood pressure, lipid parameters, glycaemic control, angina frequency, functional capacity, and cardiovascular risk scores. Quality-of-life measures improved, while no serious intervention-related adverse events were reported. Conclusion: An integrative Ayurvedic cardiac care protocol may serve as a safe and potentially beneficial adjunct to conventional treatment in patients with stable CAD. Controlled randomized trials with larger samples and longer follow-up are required to confirm clinical effectiveness and determine its impact on major cardiovascular outcomes.
