Abstract
Algae comprise a diverse group of photosynthetic organisms ranging from microscopic microalgae to large multicellular seaweeds. In recent decades, algae have emerged as an important source of bioactive compounds with significant pharmaceutical and therapeutic potential. These organisms produce a wide array of secondary metabolites, including polysaccharides, polyphenols, carotenoids, phycobiliproteins, sterols, peptides, fatty acids, and alkaloids, which exhibit antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, and immunomodulatory activities. The growing demand for natural therapeutics and sustainable drug sources has stimulated extensive research into algal biotechnology and marine pharmacology. This review summarizes the major classes of bioactive compounds derived from algae and highlights their medicinal applications, mechanisms of action, and therapeutic significance. Furthermore, the review discusses recent advances in algal bioprospecting and the future prospects of algae-based pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals.
