Abstract
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder associated with persistent hyperglycemia, reduced quality of life, and an increased risk of long-term complications. Integrative Ayurvedic lifestyle management, incorporating personalized dietary modifications, herbal formulations, yoga, meditation, and daily routine (Dinacharya) practices, has gained attention as a complementary approach to conventional diabetes care.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of integrative Ayurvedic lifestyle management on glycemic control and quality of life among patients with T2DM.
Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted among adult patients diagnosed with T2DM who voluntarily adopted an integrative Ayurvedic lifestyle program alongside standard medical treatment. Clinical parameters, including fasting blood glucose (FBG), postprandial blood glucose (PPBG), and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), were assessed at baseline and after the follow-up period. Quality of life was evaluated using a validated diabetes-specific questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed to compare baseline and follow-up outcomes.
Results: Participants demonstrated significant improvements in glycemic parameters, with reductions in FBG, PPBG, and HbA1c values following the intervention. Quality-of-life scores also improved, particularly in physical well-being, psychological health, dietary satisfaction, and overall daily functioning. No serious adverse events related to the Ayurvedic lifestyle intervention were observed.
Conclusion: Integrative Ayurvedic lifestyle management may serve as a safe and beneficial adjunct to conventional therapy for improving glycemic control and enhancing quality of life in patients with T2DM. Larger randomized controlled studies are warranted to validate these findings and establish long-term clinical effectiveness.
